Becoming eight.

Oh my goodness, there's an eight-year-old in this house!
Auntie sent Lily the world's greatest gift and the thing she wanted most, an American Girl Doll.
There was MUCH excitement, squealing and jumping when Lily realized what was in the box.

A girl and her new best friend.
Lily decided that instead of a party or a present from us, she wanted to go skiing. So we all got to spend a weekend in the mountains! (Best idea ever, LilyBug!) We kicked things off by meeting Grammy and Bumpa in Boone for a birthday dinner.

Happy birthday, Dear Lily!
(From a sweet little cabin in the mountains!)
We spent a whole day skiing!

The birthday girl had at least as much fun as she did in Austria. And she even skied a black diamond with Bumpa!
Happy, happy birthday to our favorite eight-year-old!!!

Birthday letter to an Eight-Year-Old.

Dear Lily,

It's been eight years of Love, Laughter and Lily... the sweetest Valentine I ever got!
I love all these pictures of you, because they show how much you've grown. And they show how hard it can be to get you to let go and giggle, our serious little girl, our old soul. When you do smile though, you smile with your whole heart and it's impossible not to smile back at you. You are happiest and most free first thing in the morning, greeting every new day with joy and excitement and optimism. I hope you never lose the ability to believe that each day has the possibility to be the best day ever!

But if I'm being honest, this is actually how we see you most of the time.
Because this was the year you discovered your greatest love... reading. You are such a little bookworm, with your nose in a book at every opportunity, including at your own birthday dinner. You are literally reading books faster than we can find them for you. Mommy and Daddy love this new hobby. It's so fun to talk to you about books that we've all read, and to hear your thoughts and opinions and theories! However, Rory wishes you would read less and play with her more.

Luckily for your biggest fan, you still enjoy epic weekend-long games of dress-up and make-believe with her. In fact, those games and your imagination are only more intense thanks to all the far-off places, crazy characters and wild adventures you've read about!

It's been another big year for a little girl... Your first concert (Taylor Swift), a dance recital, some piano lessons (abandoned when you couldn't play as well as you wanted immediately), a trip to the beach, a bunch of swimming ribbons won, new friends and the start of 2nd grade, a trip to Europe and learning to ski.

You are still a perfectionist in all things, but you are learning to better control your frustration and starting to understand that everything takes practice. You are slightly more willing to try things more than once, rather than giving up on them if you don't master them the first time. It's helpful that you love to read, swim and ride your bike, and that all of those things took practice, as it gives Mommy and Daddy a solid argument when you want to give up.

Through all of the year's excitement, all of your frustrations, all the quiet moments, and all of the fun ones, we could always count on this...

You continue to amaze us every day. Not just with how brilliant and brave you are, but how sweet and sensitive you remain. Not just how kind and gentle your heart is, but also how funny and adventurous your spirit has become. We are so very proud of you.

I have loved every day with you LilyBug. Every single day of the last eight years.

Happy Birthday, sweet girl.

Love Always,
Mommy
