First ride of 2013.

Finally! A nice day on the weekend - sunshine, warm temperatures and absolutely nothing we had to get done. Time to get back on our bikes. We hadn't been on a family ride since last summer, and the girls were so excited.
And what a difference a year makes...

Despite the complaints from Lily to the camera, the girls had so much fun. They both rode for well over a mile on their own. We hooked them up to our bikes and towed them when there were hills, or they just needed a rest, but they kept asking to ride on their own. It was a fabulous way to spend an afternoon, especially followed by family basketball-watching time. Syracuse made it to the final four! Yay!

Treehouse party.

Just a random, nice afternoon. Us girls, playing in the treehouse, having a little dance party. And Lucy is one of the girls, and she does not like to be left out!
How did she get up there? She climbed the ladder.

STEM expo.

The big draw at this year's STEM expo at Lily's school was the new Storybook Garden. The PTA has been hard at work on this, as has the art teacher, who has been painting murals on the walls.
It's right outside the 1st grade classrooms, and the 1st graders have been working on planting gardens for their STEM projects. Lily's class was working on ways to keep birds away from their plants. The did research online and came up with two plans: scare birds away from the plants with fake snakes and flashing lights (mostly old cd's hanging from strings to catch the sunlight), and attract birds away from the plants by hanging bird feeders in a tree far away from their garden. Lily made a bird feeder.

We also spent some time making marshmallow catapults with NC State Women in Science & Engineering students.

After all their kind help, the State students were rewarded by being hit in the head with Rory's marshmallow.

I was going through the pictures on our little camera, which Rory loves to use. That's always fun because I never know what I'm gong to find. Usually, it's a series of stuffed animal photos, or sometimes just a bunch of shots of household items, like doorknobs and pillows. But this time, I  discovered a photo shoot she did of Lily and her gymnastics trophy. Too funny.

Lily decided to get her ears pierced. I should back up. Abby, our dear friend from up the street, who is two years older than Lily, got her pierced a few months ago. One of the holes closed up and tonight she was going back to get it redone. I jokingly asked Lily if she wanted to get hers done too, knowing she'd say no, as she always does. She's not crazy about the idea of willingly getting shots. But several minutes later, she came back and announced that she *thought* she wanted to get it done. Uh-oh.

I texted Daddy, who was NOT thrilled, but who agreed it was her decision and decided to meet us at the mall. Lily watched Abby, and then decided she was ready to go through with it. She very carefully selected the plainest earrings they had ("These will match everything." - She is SO my daughter!) and then climbed in the chair, and held on to the provided teddy bear, and my hand for dear life. And then, as the girl came at her, she panicked and said, "Actually, I'm not so sure." She cried for a minute, screwed up her courage, gripped my arm tighter, and said she was ready.
Lots of tears followed. I asked if she thought she could go through with getting the second one done, and she told me she could, she just needed a minute. And then it was done. She only cried for a minute.
She so rarely needs me these days, and she's never liked being cuddled or soothed when she's hurt - she prefers to handle it herself. So is it wrong that I loved being needed tonight, as she took this big step and became even more of a big girl?

Happy birthday, Grammy!

(A week late, but just as fun!)

While we were in Charlotte, we got to go visit the puppies at Project2Heal, a group Bumpa is working with. And who doesn't love puppies?!?!

Turns out, Lily's braid looked just like a tug-of-war rope!

Rory's favorite was a girl puppy named Athena.

We wore them out!

Portrait of a road trip.

Could these two be any more different?

Spirit week and Pride Stride.

Pride Stride is the annual race at Lily's school, where the kids get sponsors and then run laps around the track to raise money for the school. This year, they kicked it off with a big pep rally.
Lily was really not sure about dancing at school!

Then there was a whole spirit week. Monday was "Dress as your favorite Dr. Seuss Character Day".
It was also "Bring your Grandparents to school for Lunch" day. So Bumpa went to school.
Tuesday was "Crazy Socks Day".
Wednesday was "Hat Day." This was Lily's own design and creation, incorporating a hat from the dollar bin at T@rget, and nearly every hair bow we own.
Friday (I know, I skipped one!) was "Team Spirit Day". I told Lily she could choose between Syracuse Orange and Carolina Blue, and our Carolina girl chose this.
Thursday was the actual race. Each class made a banner and came up with a cheer. Here come the penguins!

And then they were off around the track!

Yes, that's Lily running in a pair of green corduroy capri knickers. (With purple leggings and her pink York sweatshirt.) They were the only green clothes she could find. And it's important to be stylish while running.

Silly faces.

Lily ran 10 laps and earned almost $150 for her school!

Grand opening.

A new frozen yogurt place opened up around the corner. For their grand opening they had face painting and balloon animals (or flowers if you're one of our girls) and even nail painting!

It was pretty much the best day ever.
