Grandpa Charlie's Visit.

Grandpa Charlie came to visit from Connecticut! He hadn't seen the girls since Lily was 4 and Rory was just turning 1, so they had a lot of catching up to do. They took him up the street to their favorite ice cream place.

Rory showed him how to paint.

They shared their favorite books.

And since Grandpa Charlie likes plants, they took him to Duke Gardens for the day.

(Love, love, LOVE Rory's face in this one!)

And the girls shared lots of snuggles.

It was a great visit.

Welcoming home a Sailor.

We got to Lily's dance class just in time for the girls to help out with a very special project. Rory's teacher, Miss Sandra, has four children. Both of her girls are professional dancers. And one of her sons is in the Navy. She hadn't seen him in over a year. But she got the call yesterday that he would be flying home today for a week.

His dad picked him up at the airport and then drove him straight to the dance studio to see his mom. And when he arrived, this is what was waiting outside...
Lots of tiny dancers, including both of mine, wearing sailor hats and waving flags, and screaming "Welcome home Aaron! Go Navy!"

It was amazing, and I'm so glad that Lily & Rory got to experience it.

Thank you for your service, Aaron. Enjoy your time at home, and safe travels.

Bug Fest.

The Natural Science museum hosts a bug fest every fall. Bugs everywhere.... to look at, to touch, to hold, even to eat. Lily heard about it from some friends at school this year and was desperate to go. She told Rory all about it, and Rory announced that she wanted to eat a bug. So they went with Daddy.

Our little bugs.
Rory, holding something creepy-crawly.
And something BIG!

Hanging out with their buddy George, who was there too.
They ended up leaving due to the crazy crowds before anyone got to eat anything. Mommy was not disappointed to hear this.

Abby brought her class pet, Guinea the guinea pig, home for the weekend.
The girls wanted to be at her house pretty much every waking moment!

Labor Day at Ocean Isle.

We were so fortunate to be invited to go to the beach one last time, for Labor Day weekend, with two other families. We went to Ocean Isle... the girls checked out the view from the 4th floor deck.

That first night was a blue moon.

There were 6 kids there. The girls were so excited! Especially when Abby wanted to read to them and put them to bed every night.

Jack was less thrilled by the story selection.

The kids spent most of the first day playing in a tide pool and catching fish. With their bare hands.

Rory would pet it for a few seconds and then ever-so-gently set it "free" in the tide pool again.

Matt was catching a bunch too.

The supply of fish came from the dads playing with the casting net in the waves.

Mr. Ajello, thinking about taking a bite out of his most recent catch.

"Here Rory... look at this one."

"Look out! It's gonna bite you!"

So much fun, and the perfect end to summer!
