Potty Talk

Lily, I hope you forgive me for this post! But we are very proud of you and I want to remember this. And, while someday this might be embarrassing, right now you are so very pleased with yourself and your accomplishment - check out that proud grin!

Today was Lily's 3rd day in "big gull unner-wear". She's been reliably using her potty every night after dinner, before her bath, for months now. She was delighted each time she went because she got to put a sticker up on her chart:

Good work, right? Look at all those stickers! But, if we asked her any other time of the day if she wanted to sit on her potty, she would scream "Noooo!" very dramatically and run away. I guess stickers aren't all that cool. Fine - no pressure. Can't potty-train a kid before they're ready. But I've suspected for some time that she was ready. So, we decided that it was worth trying some additional incentive. Here's what actually worked:Yeah... Those are jelly beans... Pure sugar... In the house where kids don't really get to eat sugar... But it's working. Saturday, when we got home from the park, we convinced her to sit, and go, and gave her two jelly beans. She was hooked, and wore underwear the rest of the day, as we convinced her to sit on the potty every 20 minutes.

Day two was a bit of a challenge... She didn't want to put underwear on. So here's what convinced her to do it all again:
"Lily, if you put on underwear, Mommy will paint your toenails!"

Apparently, everyone loves a pedicure! Oh, and also, bribery works.

She had a couple of accidents, followed by a talk about how we want to keep our big girl underwear dry. After that explanation, she started keeping them dry - who knew a rational, logical conversation would work??

So here we are, on day three. She's getting a diaper for her nap and at bedtime. And the rest of the day, she's in underwear and telling us when she needs to go potty. And we haven't had any accidents since yesterday morning. It's shocking.

Of course, at this point, I'm too scared to leave the house!

Splash Park

Lily & I checked out a local public pool today, and it had one of those super-fun splash zones. Lily was a little unsure at first.

But then she got over it.

And had a wonderful time...

Two Year Old Logic

Lily, pointing to some flowers: "Deese are lilies!"

Mommy: "Yes, they are."

Lily, pointing to some other flowers: "And deese are lilies!"

Mommy: "No, those aren't lilies."

Lily, still pointing at the new flowers: "What deese are kinda flowers?"

Mommy: "I don't know."

Lily, after a few seconds' thought: "Dey are Scouts!"

Lily: "Mommy is laughing!"

Yes, LilyBug, I am laughing. A lot!

Current Obsession

Everything in phases... after our adventures yesterday, all she wants to do is paint. She's over puzzles. She has no desire to build with blocks. Play-dough is so last season. But "Can we paint???", said with her little head cocked to the side is her constant chorus. For now.

This is Lily's deep-in-concentration face:

Fun times at Marbles

Lily & I are getting into a summer routine. Our usual activities are all on break, but that is giving us some time to hang out at all our favorite places. Like Marbles - it's been months since we were there, but the Bug was so excited to see all her favorite activities and try out some new ones...

The rain boots are still there!

Check out my little pirate:

She got to build a car & then race it:

Relaxing in some beach chairs, just reading & chillin':
Lily also got to try out some watercolor paints:
And she even got to paint with marbles rolled in the paint:
Toss in lunch outside at Mellow M*shroom, and you have a perfect morning!

PS. How cute is the L*lly Pul*tzer dress that I got for $5 on ebay?!

"Look at all da flutterflys!"

Lily & I went to the museum this morning to celebrate the break in the heat wave and to enjoy being outside for the first time in two weeks. We got to see all her favorite things... the baby cow, the sheep, goat, pig, duck, bunny & donkey were all out in the farmyard. The bears were being fed and performing tricks. The lemurs were jumping around in their trees. There was a "camp" running, which included a line of about 15 three and four-year-olds. Lily kept hopping in line with them! We sailed some boats, played some drums, climbed around in the caboose and had a fabulous lunch outside. In fact, Lily ran right up to the counter and told the girl working that "I gonna have a gilled cheese!" before I could even read the menu! But the highlight today was the Magic Wings Butterfly house. Lily made some new friends...

We had so much fun! A beautiful, perfect morning... just me & my girl.

Up close & personal

Soon there won't be any room left for her...

This is what we found when we checked on the Bug last night. As the number of friends that must be in the crib each night grows, I worry about Lily having enough room to sleep!

Jumpin' with Auntie!

Thank goodness for weekends with Auntie!! Lily has been a bit...um... challenging lately. Having Auntie here was like a breath of fresh air. Lily took her to her favorite hangout, "da jumpin' pace".

Fun was had by all. We followed this with lunch at the mall - Lily announced in the car "I feel like a gilled cheese!" And then Lily & Auntie had a girls night in so that Daddy & I could have dinner out. When I came out in a dress Lily asked "We gettin' our pictures taked??" And then, when we told her that we were going out to dinner she asked "I can come?" Nope - sorry sweetpea...

Who needs a nap?!?!

Lily is an awesome sleeper. And more than that, she's an awesome crib-er. The girl loves her bed. So for about a year and a half now, without fail, she's gone into her crib at 1:00 each afternoon and gotten out at 4:00. There have been bumps, like when we took her beloved soothie away, and times when she hasn't slept the whole three hours, but she has always had this quiet time. (And so have I!)

Lately, there are at least one or two days a week when I can hear her playing, singing, yelling and chatting in her crib for awhile. On a normal day, she might make noise for a half hour or so before falling asleep. But on these other days, I may hear her until as late as 3:00. Happy as a clam, mind you, so she stays in there. And inevitably, she falls asleep for an hour or so and wakes up happy (ish) and ready to face the afternoon.

Today, she was having a par-TAY in her crib. Singing and yelling at the top of her lungs. Until 3:45. Uh-oh. I went in to get her at 4:00, frankly dreading how crabby she'd be all evening, and found this...

Sitting up, legs kicked up, friends all around and passed. out.

Too much party = a sleepy girl!

Maybe she was just too excited to sleep after I told her that her "Auntie Lissa" is at the hospital getting ready to have her baby today!

"New bwocks!"

Daddy and Lily made a special trip out this weekend to get Lily some blocks. At first, it seemed like only Daddy was going to play with them... He was certainly more excited about them than she was.

But now, Lily is all about "buildin wif bwocks"- this creation is all hers!
