One Year Check-Up

Wow - a year ago we were starting to really worry about our tiny little girl. It took her a month to get back up to her birth weight, we were taking her to the doctor for weekly weigh-ins and check ups and mommy was taking weird combinations of herbs to try and get the whole milk-thing going. It was actually pretty scary at the time. Lily spent the 1st 6 months of her life well below the "normal" growth chart. But who's worried now? Weighing in at a whopping 20 pounds, 2 ounces (35th percentile) and measuring 29.25 inches (55th percentile), our girl is still "smallish" but it seems she's merely inherited her daddy's metabolism. Lucky girl! Everything else looks good. The doctor was impressed with her walking skills, her crazy climbing abilities and her verbal development. Lily had a fine time socializing and exploring but didn't appreciate being stabbed in the leg and kept removing her band aids afterwards. She's enjoying a monster nap now to make up for it.

Want to see what pure joy looks like? Give a one year old your cell phone and let them make all the calls they want:So far, on separate occasions, Lily has called Daddy at work, Andrea, Shari and Aunt Ann. Not sure how many of those have gone through, but if you get a call from my phone and I'm not on the other end, say hi to Lily!

Oh, and we're up to 5 teeth now - the most recent one broke through today.

One Year Old

My sweet baby girl,

A year ago I couldn't have imagined what today would feel like. I didn't know that it would be so bittersweet. I am so excited to see the person you are becoming and all of the things you are accomplishing, but it is also sad to watch your babyhood fly by. No other year in your life will be quite like this one, I know. All of your "firsts" and all of the growing up you've done - that's a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

This year has been an incredible one for your daddy and me. It has been wonderful, but not always easy. There were a couple of months in the beginning when I didn't know if I could be the Mommy you deserved. But you have taught me so much about patience and generosity and love. You have helped me become not just the kind of Mommy I hoped to be, but the kind of person I want to be. And for that, I thank you.

You have become such a little person in the past year. I never really believed that personalities were there right from birth, but you proved me wrong (just one of many, many times!) You are such a busy little girl, never wanting to sit still. You have things to do! First, you have to get all of your toys out of the cupboard, and then you need to take all of your bibs out of the kitchen drawer, and then put a few back in, and then open and close the drawer a few times, and then you have to pull all of Mommy's shoes of the shelves in the closet and then head back to your room to pull all of the books of the bookshelf and look at a few pages and then crawl back to the living room. Whew. I get exhausted just watching you! You certainly know what you want, and when. You are serious and focused and determined. I hope you remain that way, because it will carry you far in life.

But you also love a good hug, you are generous with your kisses and you love to giggle. And I hope that never changes too - because the ability to laugh and love and enjoy life is so very important.

Every day you do something new or say something different and grow up a little more. I try to remember the little things: the pouty face you make when you're really concentrating, the way you giggle when you manage to pet Scout, the open-mouth yelling/laugh thing you do when you're so excited you can't stand it, the way you wave your arms around when you're eating something you really love, the way you pull your blanket up over your face as we rock before bed. I remember thinking once that I couldn't believe the time would ever come when you wouldn't fit in just one of my arms. And now as I put you to bed each night I have to remind myself that someday, probably sooner than I can imagine, you won't want or need me to rock you to sleep. But I'll enjoy those quiet, perfect moments, just the two of us, for as long as you'll let me.

When you were born and they laid you on my chest the first two things I said to you were "Happy Birthday" and "I love you so much!" And here we are a year later and try as I might to come up with something deep and insightful to say to you, all I have is this... Happy Birthday Lily Sophia! Your daddy & I love you so much. And we can't wait to see what this next year brings.

Love always,
Mommy

Tentative Steps

Shawn says Lily has taken her first steps, beginning this past Sunday, two or three at a time. I'm not so sure, since she's yet to do it spontaneously. We have to trick her into doing it by tempting her with a toy held just out of reach, or placed on the ottoman while she's holding onto the couch. Still, such a big girl!! We don't have any action shots yet, so for now, here's a picture of Lily surveying the yard...

Superbowl

We're not really football fans (like this a surprise to anyone who knows us!), but I hate to let an outfit go to waste, and we do love Chicago. So we all say "Go Bears!"
(And thanks Meghan!)

Fun at the mall

After being cooped up all day yesterday due to the "big storm", Lily & I headed to the mall and its' fabulous playground today. Lily has recently discovered her love for the slide:

She must have done this a dozen times - laughing like crazy each time, climbing right up, pushing big kids out of her way and generally having a ball. She was so very proud of herself, and loved the cheers that she kept getting from some grandparents who were there watching.

We got to meet Daddy for lunch too - Lily loves to eat at the table like a big kid:

Lily's First Snow

Yes, it did actually snow in Raleigh two weeks ago (and Shawn got that day off of work), but Lily and I were in Charlotte and missed it. So here's Lily this morning, experiencing her first snow:
"Hmmm... What's this stuff?"
.
"I think I like it!"
.
"Wait a second - My butt's cold!"
.
"I wonder if we can make a break for it? Scout - lead the way!"
.
"Can I eat this stuff?"
.
"Yuck! Mom, let's go back inside."
