Mom, I can't go to school today!

Lily has perfected her fake cough and an oh-so-pathetic sounding moan, both of which are sure to come in handy some day...

Thank you Miss Lauren!

Even if my Daddy doesn't want me to be a "Fashionista",
I love my new outfit!

MMM... Sweet Potatoes

She wasn't too sure about them at first....

But then Lily wanted to know why we'd been holding out on her!

Hey, there's stuff behind me too!

Lily has just started to realize that there is more to the world than just what's in front of her. The past week, whenever I've put her on my lap to read a story or propped her up in front of me to play, she's turned around to grin at me. "Oh hi - you're still here!" It's about the cutest thing I've ever seen.

She sits!

Clearly, she still hunches over a little, but Lily sat up unaided for several minutes today!
It's exhausting work though...
And sometimes you land on a dog!

Another first

So on Friday night Lily, whose sleep pattern has gone from bad to worse, set a new world record for night waking. She woke up 10 TIMES!!! Ouch. So, while we thought we'd wait a full 6 month to introduce solids, we caved early and gave her cereal for the first time yesterday morning. She seemed to enjoy it - see for yourself:

No miracle changes occurred last night, but she only woke up three times, which was good enough for me, at least by comparison. Hopefully this tooth or growth spurt or general dislike of sleep will pass us by quickly!

5 months old

Everyone told me that the time would fly, but I didn't really believe them. In the midst of late nights, diaper changes and seemingly endless feedings, days seemed to drag on and they all blended together. But now, when I look at the ticker at the top of this page and see that our little Lily-bug is 5 months old, I have no idea where the time has gone.

And then I look at this little girl, who is no longer a newborn, but a rolling, giggling, grabbing, sitting (sort of), teething, babbling little person with a strong will that rivals her Mommy's and a stubborn streak even longer than her Daddy's. She's growing so quickly!! She's amazing...

We've been in Charlotte all week, here are some of her latest adventures:

Snuggling with Grammy:

Playing with Grandpa at his office:

Playing with Holly:

Grocery Store Adventures

Lily & I went to the grocery store today. She was having a fabulous time chillin' in her sling and I only needed a couple of things, so we were in the store for a grand total of maybe 15 minutes. And in that time, we must have had 15 different people stop us to ooh & aah over the little cutie. Twice, I was asked which aisle I had picked her up on! It was a total riot. Lily is so much fun to take places - people just can't resist her. And how can I blame them???

Just hanging out at home
(She was sitting up all nice in her boppy, but a new trick is slithering down just before I get the picture!)

A little perspective

Teething is hard - that's what I thought....

Lily & I go to an aerobics class for new moms & babies at the hospital where she was born once a week. It's a fun class because we interact with the babies and they interact with each other. We do some stretching, some aerobics and some strength training. And at the end we sit in a circle and talk. The instructor is awesome and really encourages the moms to get to know each other. We've gone out to lunch a couple of times and a group of us walk together once a week. It's wonderful.

Out of the group of maybe 12 of us, there have been two very sad stories in the past week. One little boy has been diagnosed with liver failure and a little girl has been diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis. Both are potentially fatal. My heart aches for the two families and I am so thankful for our healthy and (mostly) happy little girl.

Rings, toes & giggles - oh my!

More 4th of July fun... The books all say that every baby develops at their own pace and that parents shouldn't get too concerned if some milestones arrive later than the so-called averages. And we try to heed that advice. After all, Lily does lots of fun "tricks" - she rolls both ways now, she loves to stand up on her strong little legs and she makes a valiant effort at sitting up. Still, it was starting to worry me at least a little bit that Lily was not grabbing for things at all yet. But here she is making up for lost time:

And finding her feet too:

And here she is having WAY too much fun with Daddy before bedtime (if you listen closely you can hear her giggling):

Speaking of bedtime, everyone's favorite question is "Is she a good baby?" or "Does she sleep through the night?" Lily has always been a champion sleeper... in the beginning we had to wake her up to make sure she got enough to eat. By two months she would give us 6 hours at night and not long after that she started sleeping for 8 and then 10 hours. We kept pretty quiet about it, because we knew it was too good to be true, and we didn't want to jinx it. We should have stuck to that strategy. Lily saw that she was giving us too easy a time of it. She hit her 4 month growth spurt hard and may be teething. I say "may" because we were convinced that she was teething last month but her doctor looked in her mouth at her 4 month check-up and said that we were imagining things... oops! Now she's back to waking up once or twice a night. And those great naps she learned to take in Florida? Back to half an hour at a time. And our fabulous bedtime routine that had her falling asleep all on her own once we swaddled her and gave her a pacifier? Not working anymore... I guess it's back to the drawing board. It's a good thing she's so cute!

Just chillin'

Lily is enjoying a laid back 1st Fourth of July Weekend. So far she's spending her time learning to lay on her tummy happily ...

And trying to get her knees up under her...

While sucking on her lower lip - her new favorite pastime!
